Newly published article from the IEHBR team on fire research

Forest fires are a common disturbance in the mountains of northwest Yunnan. However, basic information about their historical occurrence and their impacts on the environment are poorly known. Researchers at IEHBR are developing a burn scar detection methodology capable of overcoming the particular problems of mountainous ecosystems, such as harsh topography, fast vegetation recovery due to abundant summer rains, frequent cloud coverage limiting satellite observations, and small and patchy landscapes with small fires. A first step involves the selection of suitable indices which better highlight burned area 1 to 3 years after the fires occur. Our results describe the differences in four major vegetation types of the region but in general confirm the best performance of indices that combine Near Infrared and Shortwave Infrared domains of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as the Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) and the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI). These finding are very important for the next step of our research: the best spectral indices will be incorporated in the burned scar extraction methodology which will map forest fires in northwest Yunnan from 1985 to the present. The availability of this historical georeferenced fire inventory is a basic requirement to understand the impacts of forest fires in the region and assess present and future vulnerabilities of natural habitats and human property.
The research results have been published in MDPI special issue Mountain Remote sensing, with the title “
Evaluating the Best Spectral Indices for the Detection of Burn Scars at Several Post-Fire Dates in aMountainous Region of Northwest Yunnan, China”.
